THE SALAMON FAMILY · 1939–2026

From a Polish refugee in 1939 to the third generation today.

Ignatz Salamon was born in Poland. In 1939 he fled Nazi persecution via Austria and arrived in Britain. Eight years later, in 1947, he opened the original store on Bridge Street, Cardiff. After he died in 1963 his sons Wally (Walter, 1936–2008) and Otto Salamon took the business on and renamed it the Continental Delicatessen.

When the Bridge Street premises were compulsorily purchased for redevelopment in 1981, Wally moved the shop into the Royal Arcade and renamed it Wally's Delicatessen. Wally's son Steven (a qualified Chartered Accountant) joined in 1993 and became owner in 1995. The Kaffeehaus opened on the first floor in 2011; the Liquor Cellar at Castle Arcade in 2017; the Spirits from Wales kiosk at St Davids in 2018.

Three generations of one family. Same neighbourhood since 1947. Royal Arcade since 1981.
